(Nigerian slang) A hopeless or futile endeavor. In romantic contexts, if someone says pursuing a person is 'on a long thing,' it means it's not going to work out (e.g. the person is out of your league or not interested). Popularized by a Nigerian song lyric, 'you are on a long thing.'
