TOP DEFINITION
A French West/Central African slang for illicit earnings, side hustle money, or kickbacks. Literally 'okra,' but figuratively 'faire le gombo' means doing informal jobs or getting that extra under-the-table cash. If someone 'mange le gombo,' they're enjoying corrupt earnings.
"Ce marchΓ© public, c'est plein de gombo pour les fonctionnaires β chacun prend sa part au passage. (Translation: That public contract is full of illicit kickbacks for the officials β each one takes their cut along the way.)"
